The report was accurate on the day it was written. Then the funds kept moving. That does not make it wrong, and it does not make it worthless — it makes it an input.
Two different things sit in a tracing report and they age at different rates. The observation — this transaction happened, at this time, for this amount, between these addresses — does not decay at all; it is a permanent fact about the ledger. The conclusion — the funds are held at this endpoint — is a statement about a moment, and it stops being true the next time the balance moves.
Commissioning a fresh report gets you a current endpoint and a second document that is unconnected to the first. The earlier work — often the part that established the loss and the initial path, sometimes the part a bank or an insurer already accepted — is left as an orphan attachment, and the relationship between the two is asserted in a cover letter rather than recorded anywhere.
The prior report's endpoints are addresses. Those addresses can be followed forward to where the flow reaches a custodian boundary today, and that continuation can be recorded as a continuation — stating which report it starts from, what was re-confirmed against the chain, and what could not be reached.
The earlier report is evidence of what was observable on its date, by a named analyst, using a named method. That has independent value, including as a fixed point when a later account of events differs. It is preserved unaltered, digested on receipt, and attributed to the vendor or investigator who produced it. Nothing is rewritten, re-typeset, or merged into our prose.
One tamper-evident record holding the prior report as an attested input, the continuation to the present custodian boundary, whatever else the case has gathered — subpoena responses, affidavits, filings — and a single verification URL that anyone can open to confirm none of it has been altered since it was recorded.
PEGTrace does not claim to trace better than the firms that do this for a living, and does not ask anyone to choose. Their report is an input we preserve; the record is the output. If a case has three vendors' reports, an expert affidavit, and a bank's response, all five belong in one chain rather than five envelopes.
PEGTrace records and composes evidence. It does not recover funds, determine guilt, or replace an investigator. What a trace produces is a lead, not proof.
This page describes general practice and rules of evidence in plain terms. It is not legal advice, and PEGTrace does not practice law. Counsel decides what is filed, argued, or offered.
PEGTrace is an evidence and case-management tool for financial institutions, legal counsel (plaintiff and defense), and law enforcement. These pages are public awareness resources. If you evaluate fraud tooling for an institution, a law firm, or an investigative unit, we would like to talk.
